Tabanidae
I'm so excited to present to you my new collection of models!
A refreshing take on the traditional bird-winged Pegasus; Tabanidae is a collective name for these insectile winged equines. From Ladybirds (or Ladybugs) to beautiful swallow-tailed moths, inspiration has be drawn from a whole host of the beauties found in nature. This collection will grow over time, so if you're looking for a way to explore new inspiration and express your creativity without limits, look no further!
All of these models are produced at just larger than Micro-Mini (1:64) scale, but some are quite large due to the wings and stands - see measurements and further info below:
Moon Moth - offered in both clear and grey resin options. An adaptation of my original clay sculpture "Latigazo", this stunning stallion has been updated to a more chunky type and sports a shorter (you could say fuzzy...) mane and tail, which fit well with his Madagascan Moon Moth design. These wings are suitable for a variety of silk-moth species, or, given the fact these are attached to a fantasy horse, anything goes! Wingspan in this pose is 108mm (4.25"), model is 67mm tall and approx. 107mm long (4.25").
Peacock Butterfly - offered in both clear and grey resin options. An adaptation of my original clay sculpture "Amaranthine", this beautiful mare is resting her legs and her wings, maybe basking in the sun or snuggling up for a snooze. Based on the British Peacock Butterfly, again this pretty model could be painted in a huge array of patterns. Wingspan in this pose is 88mm (3.5"), model is 58mm tall (2.4").
Ladybird Daisy - offered in clear resin (grey by special request only). Based on my original clay sculpt "Dancing Daisy", this energetic little filly is ready for take-off, quite literally! She sports the elytra (shells) and wings of a Ladybird (or Ladybug, as some of you may know them by). As anatomically accurate as a micro-mini foal can be, the wings are delicate but proportionally tough. Tip - if you want to get the elytra glossy smooth, don't sand them (that sort of pressure may be too much as they're so delicate), use a clear/coloured gloss instead! Supplied with a rose-leaf base with peg-and-hole attachment. Wingspan is 63mm (2.5"), model is 38mm tall (1.5") when stood on her leaf base.
Ladybird Iris - offered in clear or grey resin options. Based on my original clay sculpt "Iris", this sleepy foal has the same elytra as their sister Daisy, however the wings are folded beneath them. I've not added a spot pattern for these foals, in the UK our native Ladybird is the classic "7-spot" however there are a great number of ladybird types and you can even use other beetles as your inspiration, opening up a myriad of metallic and pearly effects! This model measures 25mm (1") long and 12mm (0.6") tall.
Bumblebee - offered in clear resin (grey by special request only). A brand new digital sculpt, Bumblebee is based on the Jumping Shetland Ponies. I wanted to include a bumblebee as part of this new range of models and what better pony to use than a fluffy Shetland?! Leaping onto the same rose-leaf base as Ladybird Daisy, Bumblebee is truly as sweet as honey! Supplied with a rose-leaf base with peg-and-hole attachment. Wingspan is 30mm as posed (1.2") and Bumblebee stands 41mm tall (1.6") on his leaf base.
I hope to add to the Tabanidae collection of models over the coming years, the ideas really are endless, so watch out for more Tabanidae in the future and let me know if there's model or combination you'd like to see added.
Production: These models are produced via 3D printing from my Formlabs Form 3 SLA printers, in either tough grey or clear* resin. Dig out those pearly paints, sparkles, glosses and metallics, even glow in the dark and specialist UV pigments! I can't wait to see how your imagination brings these pretty little beasts to life!
*I'm offering the option of clear resin on these editions. Clear models are produced with the intention of being painted (or at least sealed with UV protection, if keeping clear e.g. on wings); they have a very slight purple, yellow, green or blue colour cast and in their unpainted state must be protected from strong UV to avoid yellowing over time. Clear resin can be sanded and polished, however using a gloss sealer will also give an excellent glassy effect and is the recommended method, at these delicate, thin wings may not stan up to the pressure needed for manual sanding. Clear resin is as tough as standard grey resin so if you are worried about how delicate these models are, please choose the grey options as they are toughest.
Grey printed Tabanidae models are produced in a custom mix resin that is tougher than standard grey or clear resin, it must still be treated with care and whilst it is very robust, these models have fine features and will still break if subject to strong impacts.
These models have some flexibility in the wings, so it's advisable to use acrylic-based primers, paints at least on the wings to ensure the longevity of the finishwork.
I don't compromise with my designs, so as with many of my sculpts, these models are extremely challenging to print successfully. I've done my best to balance this against the amazing possibilities that clear resin offers. The combination of large, thin wings and details on every side make them especially susceptible to visible print artefacts, more so than standard models. As such, even though I have spent a lot of time carefully cleaning many of the 3D printing remnants away, some of these models will have visible evidence of their production, from a very light texture on the surface, to the occasional layer line on areas that were impossible to print perfectly. Most of these remnants have been removed and any remaining should disappear under a coat of primer or clear gloss sealer, but you may still need to do a little extra sanding/polishing than you might on my other 3D printed models. Please look through the photos to get a good idea of how these models are supplied (models pictured are typical examples taken at random from those ready to go, note that clear resin is utterly unforgiving and shows every imperfection in its unpainted state).
Painted models, diorama and photography by Emma Witney of Cymba Woods Studio. Emma has taken some time out this year and has been missed, I'm thrilled to let you know she's back painting, Emma has held off announcing this until these models are released. Thank you so much Emma for all your amazing research and incredible hard work bringing these magical models to life!
