Mare and Foal (Unnamed)
Fundraiser model for the International Blessed Broodmare Project (TIBBP)
Every now and then, you work on a piece that almost makes itself beneath your fingertips. This model was such a piece. The International Blessed Broodmare Project was set up by a group of Model Horse enthusiasts in an effort to save horses that were at risk following the demise of the PMU farms in America. The full story of how these horses found themselves in such a situation can be found on the official TIBBP website.
Deeply moved by the plight of the PMU mares; draft or part draft, untrained, unhandled and mostly heavily pregnant, I wanted to help. Not being in a position to rehome a horse or help in a hands-on way, I chose to help raise funds by donating this sculpture to the cause.
I wanted to portray the hopes that TIBBP had for these horses, the mares in particular (there were also many foals and stallions in need of help). Many of the mares had been in the PMU farms for a long time, they had produced many foals but never been able to be mothers. I wanted to show a scene of what I imagined their new lives would be like. The story told itself - the mare lying down on soft grass (they are generally unable to do so for 6 months each year), taking a peaceful moment with her new foal, the foal she will raise the way nature intended.
I was lucky enough to witness, through the eyes of friends I have made along the way, the progress of many of these amazing horses and their foals as they took the first steps into motherhood and experienced their foals in the best possible way, with care provided in part by TIBBP.
This medallion (or plaque, as it is quite large measuring approximately 5" across and 2" deep) is available for purchase through Resins by Randy, who are managing the fundraiser on behalf of TIBBP. It is priced at $35, click the link below for purchasing information.
