Thistledew is my special Breyerfest 2020, Celtic Fling offering. Limited to just 50 3D printed copies she is a very special little lady for several reasons.
As my first purely 3D printed equine edition she is a ground-breaker for me, however thanks to the way 3D printed models are created, certain limitations usually associated with mould-cast models have been removed, opening up some amazing new possibilities such as super-detailed and intricate details like the chain interwoven with this uni-pony's mane!
Very loosely based on several British native ponies in terms of type and size (in keeping with this year's Breyerfest Celtic theme), this petite pony can be, well, whatever you want her to be, as is the beauty of the unicorn! I can't wait to see the wonderful array of colours these models are painted in, with pearls and fantastical shades of blue and purple, and it's no secret that I want to see rainbows at least a few of those manes and tails! She wears a chain around her neck in accordance with Celtic legend. Some say the chain depicts the wild and un-tamable nature of the Unicorn, who could only be gentled by a maiden, some say it depicts the power of early Scottish Kings who claimed they could even dominate the un-tamable Unicorn, and some say the chain represents the chaining of Scotland to England (which is why a future version without chains feels necessary, to redress the balance!).
Measuring a petite 50mm tall, this stablemate pony is true to scale so measures a little smaller than other stablemate scale models, yet features all the details you would expect from a resin of any size, including her fluttering long eyelashes! Each copy is printed and then the many dozens of printing supports are painstakingly removed (the most risky part of the process, taking well over an hour on each model) and the model is cleaned. With no seams (at all!) and zero bubbles to worry about these are beautifully clean, smooth models, I remove practically all signs of their creation so am happy to class them as semi-prepped. They will require just a gentle soapy wash on arrival at their new homes, full air drying, then just a light coat of primer and they should be ready to paint. This is a delicate model, designed to push the boundaries of this exciting new technology. 3D Printed resin is more than twice as strong as cast resin, so whilst (as with all models) it is possible to break the fine details on these models if dropped, knocked over heavily or caught with a hard tool, treated with respect and gentle handling they will easily withstand the painting process, packing for shows and the normal handling that collectibles are subject to.
The name Thistledew is derived from the Scottish national flower, the Thistle, and my family home where I grew up in Birmingham. When we originally moved there back in 1986 there were thistles growing in the garden. Technically weeds, but on seeing the my Dad came out with the typical dad-joke "I think this'll do - Thistledew, get it?", the home was named and a name plaque has adorned their house ever since, and when our family congregates at Thistledew, it is always a magical and special time.
This 3D printed stablemate scale model with chains is a 50 piece limited edition. Variations in style and scale may be offered in the future.

3D Printed models INformation:
IMPORTANT - as with all 3D printed models, it is very important to avoid exposing the unpainted resin to UV rays (ie Daylight) to stop the resin over-curing which will reduce its strength and make it brittle. Apply a coat of UV protective sealer if you wish to keep the model unpainted, or store it out of daylight until painted, at which time it can be displayed alongside your cast resins with no adverse effects. Please see my Terms and Conditions page for information on my Good Resin Guarantee as it applies to 3D printed models.
