The Lawrence Group - a selection of medallions developed on a theme
Lawrence, Claude, Baldy and Romeo are a group of medallions that all originated from the same design. Lawrence was the first model I sculpted for production. Baldy followed as I wanted to adapt the design for a model with a plaited mane but felt the Spanish style of Lawrence didn't suit that idea, so I reqorked the model, removing the mane and making the face a little more towards that of a Warmblood breed. I wanted to add the mane but took a mould first as I thought Baldy would make a nice medallion for other people to add the mane to should they like. After adding the plaited mane I named the new model Claude.
I made all three models available and I cast 43 Lawrence medallions, 25 Claude medallions and 12 Baldy medallions. I also cast some "head-only models, as pictured below, which made lovely card-toppers, magnets or gifts. I cast some of the edition in special finish materials, including three sets of Brass, Aluminium and Bronze (look like gold, silver and bronze), which I donated to the Live Shows I went to that year.
I was later approached by Karen Dietrich, who asked if should could use the designs for a show she was planning. She wanted to cast them in clinky form and glaze them to be given as prizes. As you can see, she found some great glazes including a fantastic "firework" style glaze, as pictured on a Claude model she cast in the Gallery above.
Some years later I was again approached and asked to provide a medallion design for Barb Ness to cast in clinky form (forgive my ignorance,I'm not sure what the exact material used was) for a model to be given to all those who donated to the NAMHSA auction that year. I didn't have time to create a medallion from scratch, but inspired by a Friesian horse a friend and I stumbled across on a visit to Yorkshire, I thought a Friesian style might compliment the Lawrence group quite nicely, and set about creating "Romeo". I cast out a few copies of the slimline version of the model and sent two to Barb who made the mold for the model she was to issue. She cast an edition out and sent me a selection of art-glaze copies and a couple of realistic-glazed copies as keepsakes for my friend and I. My favourite colour is the one pictured above, the blue/green mix is really beautiful.
Here are some more copies I cast, including some in cold cast metals, a special Christmas edition and some split finish copies (where the foreground is cast in a different material to the background).
